A Russian skier was killed while his compatriots were rescued after an avalanche hit the ski-resort Gulmarg on Friday, the police said.

According to sources, a group of Russian skiers comprising 9 members left this morning for skiing in Gulmarg.

The incident is second of its kind within a period of one month. In January last, a Swedish skier was killed while his countrymen were rescued after an avalanche hit the area.

Both the incidents according to reports had occurred at Hapatkhod which is considered as prohibited area for skiing.

Group sizes

A group of 3-5 is usually a good number. If just two, one could be alone in the search and rescue and not be able to fetch help. Risks tend to increase in groups of more than five.

The first 15 minutes

The chance of survival after being buried by an avalanche is ca 80% in the first 15 minutes. After this the chance drop dramatically.
